Diversify To Survive
Snead doesn’t intend to plant any more apple trees, when his orchards need replacements, he’ll put in peaches, plums and other fruits. ‘‘I want to diversify. I’m trying to go as many different ways as I can so I’m not at the mercy of a processor just a few buyers. Direct marketing is a sign of the times and I’m doing what’s necessary to hang on.”
Livestock producers have also adopted the direct marketing approach. Lois Snead has sheep that she’ll take directly to the slaughter house for a buyer or sell off her farm at a slightly lower price to someone who wants to take the animal to the butchers themselves.
