People who delay applying for social security retirement or survivor benefits for some time after they become eligible may be affected by a change in the law which took effect March 1, according to Bruce A. Hundley, social security manager in Culpeper.
Under the new law, back payments can be made only for up to 6 months before the month of application, Hundley said. Under the old law, back checks could be received for up to 12 months
