McCarthy let the parents of the special education students know in early spring that her Friday class would be available to their children. After her plan was approved, the school arranged a classroom for her, but parents were responsible for the fees and for getting the children to and from school.
“I have one family that had to change their entire work schedule to bring their child to school for this class,” McCarthy said. “I can’t help but feel that this attitude in itself makes the children see how important it is that they keep up the momentum they’ve gained in the past year.”
Only children who wanted to take the special class were asked to sign up.“A lot of the special ed students don’t like school anyway,” McCarthy said. “I didn’t want to force anyone to come. Also, many are needed for work around their farms and homes during the summer.”
So McCarthy ended up with a group of six very lively and interested students. “1
