Miriam Harris of Huntly thinks direct marketing is “the only answer for the small scale farmer.” She has one acre in organic strawberryies in a pick-yourown operation that she plans to expand.
She began with labor from people who were interested in learning to work on a farm and is now switching to a more commercial approach, trying to hire local teenagers or unemployed laborers through the Virginia Employment Commission for the planting, weeding, fertilizing, mowing and thinning that must be done regularly on her plot.
