You can’t pay a man enough to stay with a cow until 1 or 2 a.m. on weekends, Thanksgiving and Christmas, waiting for her to calve. Nobody else will do it but the man who owns that cow.”
Orchardist Sam Snead also sees direct marketing as the salvation of the family farm, at least until the economic picture changes. “It’s the way to go. Farmers are taking a real beating now. A farmer can take his own operation and fit it into a pick-yourown set up or some other type of direct marketing with as little land as a half acre or as much as a 100.”
