McCarthy, a second-year teacher at Rappahannock Elementary School, ran a center for handicapped and disadvantaged children in New Hampshire and believes that all children with learning problems have a lot in common.
“I don’t think it’s necessary to label a child with difficulties,” she said. “Sometimes the fear of having a child labeled ‘retarded’ or ‘emotionally disturbed’ or ‘disadvantaged’ keeps parents from accepting special help for their children. Every child, whether handicapped mentally, physically, emotionally or economically has certain problems that we Can help if we know how.”
McCarthy’s belief that the main focus should be on improving the learning skills of children without emphasis on labels puts her in the camp of the educational behaviorists.
“My approach is definitely that of a behaviorist,” she said. “I may not ever be able to change the circumstances that I have no control over. I may not be able to say exactly why a child has a specific learning problem. But I am trained to know what methods will help to improve certain problems, no
