“People who are able to market at least part of their crop directly are the ones who are making the money,” said Rap Owings, VP1 extension agent for Rappahannock.
VPI has moved to the forefront of the movement. The extension service now has a separate department for direct marketing and publishes free seasonal guides for fruits, vegetables, Christmas trees and firewood. Brochures on other agricultural products, including beef cattle, are now in the planning process.
