One of the most common symptoms of rabies in wild animals is loss of normal fear of humans and other natural foes. According to Einarson, a rabid skunk in the northern part of Fauquier followed a dog onto the porch of a house. “The skunk had no fear at all,” Einarson said.
Rabid animals may also bite randomly, appear sick, foam at the mouth, lack energy and develop paralysis in the hindquarters.
Bites from any animal, wild or domesticated, should be reported. If possible, the pet should be penned up, or in the case of a wild animal, killed. Bites should be washed thoroughly with soap and water. This precaution may prevent the disease from entering the blood stream.
Rabies in humans is always fatal unless treated. According to Einarson, only two individuals have survived rabies without receiving the series of immunizing shots and both had supportive treatment including a respirator.
Fortunately, the disease is rare in humans. Cases have dropped sharply from the 20 or 30 a year reported in the 1930’s to an average now of two per year, according to Einarson.
