Dogs and cats suspected of coming into contact with the disease should receive booster shots even if their immunizations are current, Einarson added, as cases have also occurred in animals protected against rabies.
Although most human exposure occurs through animal bites, the virus is transmitted through saliva and can enter the bloodstream through the smallest scratch. According to. Einarson, one of the four persons currently undergoing anti-rabies treatment was feared to have been exposed to the disease through a small crack in the skin around a fingernail.
