According to Einarson, the incubation period for rabies in animals is generally two to three months but can be as long as a year. “So the current cases were probably contracted in February or March,” he said.
The health department director noted that the upper Shenandoah Valley was the site of a large rabies outbreak in the early 1970’s with sporadic cases reported in the lower Shenandoah area during the last ten years. “We can surmise that it probably came from there,” he said.
Einarson cautioned area residents to be alert to the possibility of rabies in wild and domesticated animals. “Don’t try in any way to investigate a sick animal,” he emphasized.
Wild animals suspected of having rabies should be shot and their bodies brought to the health department for testing.
