Chock’s Best Friend
With Chuck, however, Max is just a regular old dog. In their off duty hours, the two take long hikes through the rolling fields and woods around Washington. Like any other family pet, Max revels in the praise he gets for retrieving tennis balls from local farm ponds for his master.
But if someone should threaten Moore, they’d have to settle with the big German shepherd first. “He can tell when someone’s just horsing around. He doesn’t like it but he’s got good sense enough not to do anything. But there’s no doubt in my mind. If someone really attacked me, he’d nail them!”
Chuck feels that he and Max could be a more effective unit if he had the opportunity for more hours of drilling with his partner instead of having to split his time between canine corps responsibilities, road patrol and other routine duties. “Sometimes I wonder why I got into this!” trooper Moore joked. “Seriously, I like working with dogs. It makes the job much more interesting."
Chuck Moore’s feelings about his job may be a little bit ambivalent but there’s no uncertainty in his feelings toward Max. “He’s the best friend you’ll ever have!”
