“This certainly is a good thing,” said acting supervisor chairman J. R. Latham as the supervisors were asked at Tuesday’s meeting to endorse an application for a $63,837 grant which the Rappahannock Recreation Authority plans to use for additional picnic facilities, tennis and basketball courts at the center on Route 211.
“This is one of the things Rappahannock County has been lacking. It’s far better to provide tennis and basketball courts for kids rather than have them driving up and down the road, shooting at mailboxes and signs!" the Jackson District representative said.
On behalf of the Rec Authority, clerk Diane Bruce explained that the supervisors must give their approval, agreeing to take title to and assume responsibility for the 5.6 acre site, before the Virginia Commission on Outdoor Recreation (COR) formally awards the grant. The board's endorsement is necessary because the grant's 50 percent local match is being covered through donation of the Rec Authority property to the county.
H. B. Wood asked whether the county already held title to the parcel as part of an earlier grant application.
Bruce acknowledged that the county had had an agreement with the Rappahannock Recreation Center, forerunner of the Recreation Authority, but noted that title of the property hadn't changed hands as part of that
