Medicare hospital insurance can cover care in a skilled nursing facility for people in the Culpeper area when eligibility conditions are met, according to Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security Manager in Culpeper.
Hospital insurance covers post-hospital care in a skilled nursing facility that takes part in Medicare when all of the following conditions are met:
—The patient was in a hospital for at least 3 days in a row, not counting day of discharge.
—The patient is transferred to the skilled nursing facility because he or she needs further care for a condition which was treated in the hospital.
—The patient is admitted to the facility within a short time, usually 14 days after leaving the hospital.
—A doctor certifies that skilled nursing or skilled rehabilitation services are needed and being received on a daily basis.
—-The facility's utilization review committee or the professional standards review organization does not disapprove the stay.
When all of these conditions are met, hospital insurance can pay for care
