Stuart told us that the Clinton grapes so sought after by deer had yielded fifty pounds last year from one row and thirty from the other row. His worst enemies are the birds, who drill holes in the grapes and suck out the juice. Then the hornets arrive, go through the holes the birds have made, and stay inside the grape until the job is finished. Although there were hornets around and inside many of the clusters we picked, none stung us and I assume they were just in too good a mood from the sweet juice to live up to their reputation for irritability.
