On behalf of Wyatt Durrette. I would like to correct a number of distortions and deliberate misrepresentations of fact made by the Democrat candidate for Attorney General on his recent visit to Washington as reported in the August 6. 1981 edition. Rather than emphasizing his own ideas and qualifications for the office he seeks, Mr. Baliles chose to punctuate his remarks with negative allegations about Wyatt Durrette’s record. How unfortunate that these allegations were not verified before they were printed.
Baliles alleged, for example, that Wyatt Durrette had opposed legislation which established a program to compensate innocent victims of crime. The fact of the matter is that Wyatt Durrette not only chaired the commission which studied the proposal and recommended the legislation establishing such a program, Wyatt Durrette was the sponsor of the bill in the House of Delegates. His bill provided for an appropriation of funds with which to put the program into effect. Durrette voted against an alternate proposal which had no provision for appropriating funds to compensate victims of crime.
Equally misleading is Baliles' allegations that Durrette has vacillated on the abortion issue. He charges that Wyatt Durrette once sponsored “sweeping liberal reforms” of abortion law. The truth is that Durrette has consistently opposed abortion, and that after the 1973 United States Supreme Court decision.
