Jail Space
May Be Needed
There’s no difficulty at present in using space in the jail for the dispatch center, Buntin continued. "But if we get a new jailor with a family, he may need that room," the sheriff said, noting that $2,000 is deducted from the jailor’s salary in exchange for housing plus utilities provided in the jail.
The jailor also serves as a deputy, spending a substantial amount of time transporting prisoners, according to Buntin. In addition, Mannion has Wednesdays off. If a prisoner is brought in during that time off, the prisoner is taken directly to the Warrenton jail. Buntin noted.
“The big cost of this is going to be manning it,” said Wood. “We’re talking about 24 hours per day.”
Although the sheriff isn’t interested at present in being dispatched through a local station, if he changes his mind, it might be possible to get the state to fund one or two dispatch positions, Poling interjected.
Despite the money problems, we’re obligated to the people to take this first step,” maintained supervisor Hubert Gilkey, urging his fellow board members to commit the local funds for the grant application. “If we don’t, we’ll be selling the people of Rappahannock County short.”
Estes agreed, adding that the grant application presented an excellent opportunity to acquire the communications equipment.
