In looking at projects, the Authority reviewed the possibility of buildihg a swimming pool, judging that this would be first choice for most county residents, according to Bruce. The Authority found, however, that a poo] would cost $200,000 just to install and would require substantial funds for maintenance. She noted that the original Recreation Center committee had also worked towards raising money for construction of all-purpose courts several years ago after being turned down on a swimming pool grant. Additional picnic areas on the banks of the Rush River, tennis and basketball courts “were things that were affordable” with available grant funds, Bruce said. The 5.6 acre recreation center across the highway from the town of Washington is not big enough for baseball or soccer fields, she explained, because of (1) power lines which cross the property and (2) the location of the pavillion on the site.
She also noted that improvements planned by the Authority will require a minimum of maintenance, pointing out that the tennis courts will be hard surfaced. ‘•‘We’d also ‘Moped that maybe Rappahannock High School could have a tennis team if we have the courts.” Bruce said. She added that this was something the Authority members have only discussed among themselves, not with the county's school board.
