County, has been given a quota of 1200 units in the fiscal year that began on July 1 of this year. As their part in meeting that quota, Rappahannock residents are being asked to contribute at least SO units on September 16 (a unit is approximately one pint).
The Fauquier Hospital, which gets its blood from the Red Cross, uses more than twice as much blood as is collected by the Fauquier Chapter each year. The combined population of Rappahannock and Fauquier is more than 41,000. If only 3 percent of that number donated blood, the quota of 1,200 units would be attained, but that would still be below the hospital’s needs of about 2,000 units a year. According to Red Cross estimates, 60 percent of the population is eligible to give blood. If as little as 5 percent of the population were to donate blood not only would the quota be exceeded, but the hospital’s needs perhaps could be met.
