Eastham calls on the Rappahannock News to commence speaking up editorally for the “general public interest” as it relates to land use and the county’s fiscal future.

It’s in the general public interest to continue a use value taxation program that helps keep farming and its related operations in business.
It’s in the general public interest to continue a use value taxation program that encourages the maintenance of forests and open spaces that are so attractive to the city dweller.
It’s in the general public interest to have those city dwellers visiting Rappahannock.
Eastham calls it “milking the transitory tourist.” Do Williamsburg and Waterford milk the transitory tourist? If that’s what it’s called, then we want to get into the milking business, too.
But we prefer to look at it another way. The tourists spend their money for good food and comfortable lodgings. They hike in our beautiful mountains, fish in streams and ponds and ride over fields and trails. They watch historical pageants, purchase quality antiques, crafts and art, buy a bushel of apples, fresh vegetables or a bag of groceries for a picnic lunch and snacks and then fill up their gas tanks for the ride home.
We call it giving value for value. And the value, the money these visitors leave behind keeps existing businesses in operation and encourages newr ones.
