“There wasn’t the feuding and clannishness in Piney Run that there was back in the Hazel,” Johnson said. “There weren’t as many stills, and the folks got to town more, were less suspicious of strangers.”
“Captain Henry didn't want to leave,” said Johnson. “It had been his home since he was a young man. At 85, he built a new home farther down. With him, he moved his coffin, made by himself twenty years before. I guess he wanted to be prepared.”
Other old-timers were not so flexible as Captain Henry. “I know they just grieved themselves to death. I know they did," Johnson said.
