On Moonshining
Whiskey and brandy were made mainly for the family's use, with sales being greater in some of the well-known moonshine hollows. Some whiskey was sold at Skyland and during prohibition there was more of a demand. Distillation of corn was essential where bad roads made it impossible to transport the fresh product - in its concentrated form, corn took up little space.
On The Chestnut
People gathered chestnuts by the bushel to sell or use for barter. Chestnut bark contained tannin, in demand for curing leather. In early spring, mountain people would chop down a tree, split the bark and peel it off. Chestnut logs were in demand for telephone poles or for railroad ties. They were almost free of knots.
Chestnut blight reaches the Blue Ridge in the 192()’s. Within a few years it wiped out the American chestnut.
