“This should be an interesting event,” said William Carrigan, one of the organizers behind Rappahannock’s 100 year time capsule which will be sealed this July 4th for reopening on Independence Day in the year 2083. “Would not it be interesting for us if we had a time capsule planted in 1833 with letters. documents and pictures telling about life in these parts, a message to open on July 4th this year?”
On being asked to write a letter to school children of 2083 telling about school activities in 1983, one eighth grade student remarked that the time capsule is a pretty “neat” idea. Mr. Carrigan reported. The child continued, “Maybe I’ll be there for the opening. With all the medical advances to extend life, why not? I may have someone else’s heart or liver. It’s neat!” he added.
According to Mr. Carrigan. writing letters to the s third, fourth, fifth, even sixth unborn generation to follow may make today’s Rappahannock citizens ask themselves what’s being done to make the county a better place to live in and what’s being done to preserve the environment for the future.
