Cash was needed for three things - for shoes, for taxes and for coal oil. “What they needed cash for, they could trade for too,” Johnson said. “There’d be folks coming into the stores and they’d know just about what they needed and they’d bring a basket of chickens and a basket of eggs and it might work out within a few cents of what they bought.”
Besides the pork, eggs, chickens, fruit and vegetables, the folks on Piney Run had plentiful squirrels, rabbits and turkeys, chestnuts and black walnuts.
Men in Piney Run always wore suits when they went out of the hollow. “Black suits, with little black ties,” Johnson said. “Otherwise, they were in overalls.”
