Could A Woman
Beat Warner?

A still small but perhaps growing number of Democratic strategists are coming around to the view that 1984 might be a good year for a woman to run for the U.S. Senate in Virginia.
Next year’s balloting is less than 18 months away. No candidate of either gender has stepped forward to seek the Democratic nomination to oppose incumbent Republican Sen. John Warner who will be up for reelection.
Since the Democratic sweep of statewide offices in 1981, a number of names have been mentioned as possible candidates, but not much has happened beyond the mentioning.
There is universl agreement that the Democrat with the best chance of unhorsing Warner would be Gov. Chuck Robb, but Robb firmly asserts that he likes his present job and has no plans to attempt a change. Alexandria attorney William Thomas, a close Robb confidant, was making candidate-like noises a year ago, but has been notably silent on the subject in recent months. His interest is believed to be waning.
