“It took some children years to get over that humiliation,” Johnson said. He recalls that when he started school in Sperryville in 19dH, his home was more modem than 90 percent of his schoolmates but the “country” label was used anyway.
But Johnson does believe that, for many of the young people, re settlement ended up being beneficial. Some got good jobs, got more schooling, were better prepared for the changes in the world than if they had stayed in the hollow. Still, he remembers nights in Piney Run with Captain Henry and some good homemade music under the mountain stars and the older folks who “grieved themselves to death.”
