After taking courses at a business school, he was hired at the Rappahannock National Bank in Washington as a clerk, for $50 a month. After two years, he was promoted to assistant cashier, a position that included most of the management of the bank. A raise went with the new position - he now got $75 a month and slept in a room over the bank.
He was the first person to work at the bank who had gone to college or had taken courses in accounting, bank law or investments.
