ar too many people perceive AA meetings as grim sessions where life’s losers crv on each other’s shoulders. That picture couldn’t be further from reality.
Certainly, alcoholics are serious about AA. They believe their lives depend on it. But "meeting” is an inadequate word to describe AA groups - “fellowship” is much more appropriate.
Sessions begin with a prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
Serenity, courage, wisdom - those words are hallmarks of the AA fellowship.
There’s serentiy in the smiles and hugs that welcome newcomers and old timers alike to the AA meetings in Washington, Madison and Culpeper. A coffee pot sends its warm aroma throughout the room. “Where ever you find AA, you always find plenty of coffee," joked one non-practicing alcoholic. Friends catch up on gossip and share the latest family news.
