the entire Council was invited to New York City, where Mrs. Davis was a contestant on a program broadcast weekly from Radio City Music Hall.
Backstage, before the program began, the emcee was shooting questions at members of Washington’s all-women Council. He asked Mrs. Hawkins about her responsibilities.
“I’m in charge of the lights,” Mrs. Hawkins responded properly, then paused. “But I don’t go up the pole!”
Make Presentation
Mrs. Davis and Miss Jenkins presented Mrs. Hawkins a commemorative gift on behalf of the current Town Council — an Ironstone blue and cream-colored platter. The platter was inscribed: Dorothy B. Hawkins, In Appreciation, Town Council, Washington, Virginia.
“I just really lack the words to show my appreciation,” Mrs. Hawkins said.
Mayor Newbill Miller remembered the all-women Council too, and credited it with much of the beauty of the county today.
“It was a significant Council, that turned things around in Washington,” Miller said. “They started clean-up campaigns and beautification campaigns.”
Miller also applauded Mrs. Hawkins and other members of the most recent Town Council.
“Your decisions have never been self-serving," he said. ’They’ve always been for the benefit of the town, which has been made better during the last eight years.”
During its last regular meeting, the Council approved payment of the bills, and the proposed budget for 1964-86.
The Council also discussed the need for reflectors, as safety precautions, in two places in Washington. The highway maintenance department will be contacted regarding the reflectors, and a recommendation will be passed on to the new Council, whose first mestfogisJuly II.
