Rush River have been justifiably concerned about the sewage problem. That is just one problem. But have we looked to the next one... the garbage? Somehow the dumpster near Flint Hill does not seem an adequate site for disposal of medical waste.
These questions are just an iceberg tip beginning.
I have seen human warehouses and lived in a community where non-accredited group homes existed. One result was even more tragic than the ongoing tragedy of warehousing, as fire took the lives of the mentally retarded in an unaccredited group home.
Before the Board gives approval to this group home, I hope that it will confer with, and insist by legislation, that any facility of this nature be accredited by the Joint Commission and that the county be made aware of the necessary increase in cost, needed legislation and enforcement facilities that will ensue.
A custodial population, be it geriatric, psychiatric or retarded, Is a community responsibility et grave order. We have to know the extent of our responsibilities if we are to accept this venture. Without knowing our responsibilities we are negligent. We could also be involved in tragedy.
