and Talented coordinator’s position was terminated. A new position, the Special Programs coordinator, was created. A major duty of this person would be to coordinate the Gifted and Talented Program. The 1982-83 school session began. We teachers waited for word on the G A T Program. And waited. We were told that workshops and in-services were being planned, that one day soon we would be trained as to how to deal effectively with Gifted and Talented students on a duly basis in our classrooms.
I was particularly interested in this, because that year I was privileged to have many of the top thirdgrade students, including several with outstanding talents, and a couple who were very obviously gifted. These students had participated in the GAT Program in previous years. We waited to hear when the new program would start up.
In the meantime, I did what I could to challenge my bright children, while also teaching the basics to those more slowly paced.
