Melissa is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cary C. Thornhill of Boston, Virginia, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Gross of Silver Spring, Maryland.
Miss Thornhill will graduate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in June. Mr. Whittington, an alumnus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, is currently attending the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
A July wedding is planned.
