I originally intended to discuss these questions and concerns solely with School Board members, but reading the article on the last Board meeting changed my mind.
The public schools are public business. Imagine the outcry if we informed parents of retarded or learningdisabled children that their students would receive special help...after school or during the summer. Yet, we are relegating those students with the greatest academic potential to occasional after-hours sessions with unsupervised volunteers, or to summer sessions, which many can’t attend because of conflicting plans.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Our county is bursting with human resources in the shape of artists, architects, computer-programmers, forestry experts, journalists, successful business people and those involved with government. We have the community. We have the eager Gifted and Talented young people, and teachers willing to teach them. All we need is planning, direction and leadership.
