*n»e sky above Amissville was a sea of color May 6 when a hundred red, green, yellow and blue balloons were released as part of the festivities to mark Graham Hackley’s 50th anniversary behind the counter of the village’s country store.
In the weeks since, a few of those balloons have come back, carried on their return trip by the Postal Service rather than the four winds.
The balloons were attached to tags that announced the 50th anniversary celebration, and asked for their return by the finders. Their landing points show which way the wind blows over Amissville.
Hackley’s balloons were picked up in Waldorf and Prince Frederick, Maryland, and in Delmar and Frankftirt, Delaware. The biggest bunch touched down at Bethany Beach where Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Car Ion, vacationing from Edina, Minnesota, found 17 scattered on the sand.
Alter plotting the balloons’ landing spots, Mrs. Hackley reports that all fall in a straight line from Amissville. And straight away, she plans on sending each of the finders a “Hackley’s Store”, tee-shirt.
