The Board of Commissioners will allow the Amissville teams to complete the season traveling to Fauquier for all games. Also, the teams may compete in the leagues’ playoffs, Arbogast said, if they reorganize the teams without the ineligible players.
“We had to do it for the integrity of the, lepflies and to protect the integrity of the kids involved,” said Arbogast, explaining the controversy.
“We didn’t feel it would be in the best interest of the kids caught in the middle of this to throw them out of the league or to get rid of the coaches in midseason,” said Arbogast of the Board of Commissioners’ decision.
“I’m not going to come out and say it was a blatant violation of the bylaws, but if they didn’t know about it (the residency rule), it’s not the board’s fault,” said Arboipst.
The Amiss ville #1 team in the Minor League had a 6-0 record when the ruling was made and the Amissville #2 Minor League team was 1-5. The Amiss ville Midget League team’s record was 5-4.
Amissville officials admitted the use of ineligible players, according to the bylaws, but denied any intentional violation.
"It was a mistake and we’ll take whatever punishment they give us. Just give us a chance to get in the league next year,” Dodson said.
“No one was trying to cheat anybody,” said Amissville Midget League Coach Bill Settle Monday. “We never really questioned where anybody lived, we’re just trying to have the kids in our community up here playing ball. ”
