the bluegill population in control, and don’t taste as good, believes Bankston, as smaller bass. "Throw the big ones back.”
Bankston would like to see land owners encourage other people to fish on their land, just to keep the blue gill populations down. For every pound of bass, three to four pound of bluegill should be taken.
Other misconceptions are also rampant. Snapping turtles, says Bankston, are not dangerous in the water. If you keep moving, a turtle will not bite (probably).
For the best fishing, says Bankston, go to Madison County, the Shenandoah in Page County, Lake Anna or Louisa. You won’t find much in Rappahannock that’s open to the public.
