Two contractors originally had bid to complete the work, E.M. Martin and Texas Roofing Corp.
E.M. Martin withdrew its bid July 2, however, when the company discovered it had under-estimated the bid by some $25,000.
Assistant superintendent of schools, Thomas Campbell, announced the bid withdrawal at the meeting, and asked the supervisors’ guidance on whether to pursue more bids for the pitched roof, or just go ahead with flatroof repair.
“We’d be cheating ourselves if we don’t go with the tapered roof,” supervisor Hubert Gilkey III, said.
Other supervisors agreed, and recommended that school administrators pursue more estimates.
The problem, Campbell explained, now becomes one of time. School starts August 23, he said, and it’s the contractors’ busy season.
Despite assurances by contractors that a flat roof will keep water out just as well as a tapered roof, supervisors stuck by their guns.
