The Watt appeal for subduing the wilderness, his defense of land, mineral, and forest policy, was balanced by a letter from National Geographic, which urged me to buy a book entitled Our Threatened Inheritance so that I will know what that inheritance is, how it is threatened, and what to do about the threat.

There was a letter from the American Heart Association asking for contributions in support of research in heart disease. Though there was no clear counter-appeal to this, there was a distracting lead article in Executive Health, entitled, “On That Treacherous Gland...Your Prostate (An Update).”
I decided that I had had enough of warnings and admonitions, and was about to throw the rest of my mail, unopened, into the waste basket, when I was distracted by the barking of my dog.
I went out to investigate. I found that a large, green Cadillac, of some years’ service, had been driven into my driveway. I thought that it might be a bottle-gas salesman, or possibly someone intent on selling me a Culbgan water-softener system.
It was neither. It was a Jehovah’s Witness who had come over the mountain from Luray, in Page County, Virginia, to warn the people of Rappahannock County of the signs and portents of the destruction of the work! and the coming of the Kingdom.
I listened to his message, to his quotations from the bibie with rising optimism. I told him of the depressing mail I had just been through and how his words had uplifted my spirits. I bought three pamphlets from him, and told him that I, in the spirit of trust and hope, was going to plant my tomatoes, hoping for one more crop, at least.
