Somehow we Christians have become convinced that to believe all the right things is to become a Christian. If we agree with certain bibilical propositions, we are declared to be “bom again;” but all the while forgetting that the demons of the New Testament possess this same faith! Lip service to doctrinal formulas, no matter how scriptural, is still only another form of religion.
If all this is true. I might ask, what then does determine whether I am a Christian? Is not sound doctrine a must for any Christian? In answer, I can honestly say that what makes me a Christian is not what I believe, (though that’s important) but what really makes a Christian out of me is who I believe.
I am taking God’s word for it. I am daily submitting myself to the authority of the "who” of my existence: Jesus Christ. It is Jesus who makes the difference in the way I live. It is Jesus who leads by his Spirit through his people and his Word for the improving of my doctrine.
I am set free from any obligation to a doctrinal technology. I am set free from any model other than the true image of God in Jesus Christ. I am free to approach every person as my equal, made in God’s image. I am truly free from religion.
Either we are communicating religion or Christ to our world. Most people aren’t rejecting the Lord. They don’t even see the Lord! What people do see is our religion sticking out all over. Is that really all we Christians can offer?. . . a competitive religion?
If Jesus can be thought of as starting a new religion, his is a religion to end all religion. Jesus did not live and die for a religious cause. Jesus lived and died for the world. If Jesus had a cause, his cause was people; people just like you and me.
