.18 of an inch of rain. Toward the end of the first week the temperature had climbed to the low 90’s. Those nice warm days we could only think about in January, when there were subzero temperatures, had finally arrived. Indeed they had.
The high temperatures continued. June’s second week was a scorcher, and the first day of summer was not in sight. Depending upon location, people checking their thermometers could find a reading of 90 degrees or more everyday from June 8th to June 14th. Air conditioners and fans were challenged to bring back some of those January degrees, swimming pools were crowded, shade trees considered a blessing a few tempers flared. This must have reminded our farmer friends of last summer when, in July, less than an inch (.83) of rain came for that entire month.
Relief from the heat came on June 15 when the high temperature reached only 79. The rest of the month saw temperatures mostly in the 70’s and 80’s and a measurement of 3.16 inches of rain.
Total rainfall for the month was 3.46 indies. This June averaged 2.2 degrees wanner per day than last June. Last June’s precipitation was 4.40 inches. Last June produced only one day with temperatures 90 or above (92 on June 27), June of 1982 had no days of 90 or above. This June had eight days of temperatures in the 90’s and three more that missed the 90 mark with a high of 89. No wonder the topic of conversation spoke to June’s heat wave.
