Push has come to shove over Rappahannock County’s animal-shelter facilities.
According to Walt Lane, president of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, legal moves to get the county to comply with state animal-welfare laws will be “forthcoming as soon as out on computer and lodged with circuit court.”
Lane met July 30 with about 20 Rappahannock citizens to discuss the county’s animal-shelter facilities, currently located on the property of Animal Warden Jack Bruce.
A June 25 inspection of the facility by Dr. L. E. Bowen, Jr., state animal welfare officer, revealed the Rappahannock shelter “unacceptable” in nine of 11 categories, among them:
• Individual cage construction and size.
• Euthanasia.
• Disposal in 24 hours.
Lane said the county had been dragging its feet on the issue since ' 1980. He alluded to an April 24, 1981 letter to the chairman of Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors advising him the county was in direct violation of state laws regarding euthanasia.
