Lewis M. “Lew” Costello is running for Congress in more ways than one these days.

The Democratic candidate for Virginia’s 7th District seat in the House of Representatives, Costello made a pit stop in Rappahannock July 27. He called the race with Republican opponent D. French Slaughter “the earliest, fastest race at this time I can remember in the 7th District.”

Costello was the guest speaker during • luncheon at the home of Lee and Diana Bird of Washington. The .Birds long have served in Vagina’s Democratic Party; Mr. Bird is chairman at Rappahannock's Democratic Committee.

Accompanied by wife Joy and campaign volunteer Lee Whitacre, Costello spent just over an hour with 20 or so people who attended.

Costello called the federal deficit “not just an issue; it may be the issue.” The candidate said his own poll and expertise in the area make him believe doing something about the deficit is critical.

An accountant-lawyer with 22 years experience in tax litigation, Costello said in regard to the deficit, “It’s
