Meanwhile, soil samples had been taken and lime and sheep manure (supplied by Fairlea Farm) had been applied. Volunteers had studied the market as well as the dimensions of the garden and mapped out a plan and their requirements for seeds. They were ready to begin.
Scoggin made the final preparations for planting. “I wanted to do that myself,” he said. “I was learning.”
Weather, as usual, was not cooperative, but Anally, during the second week in May, the garden was completely planted.
During the first few weeks of working, Scoggin realized another benefit of his group approach. “We had a wonderful time,” he said. “It’s easier to talk to people when you’re working beside^hem than it is if you visit them as their pastor and sit in the parlor. Also, some of us might not have gotten to know each other at all without this common interest. Work went faster, was more pleasant and more productive.”
