At the beginning of this year, people across the United State began the celebration of Smokey Bear’s 40th birthday. During the month of May, the Divisions of Forestry throughout the U.S. began publicity for the sale of an “Official First Day Cover.” This “cachet” includes an envelope with color artwork, commemorative U. S. postage stamp, and postmark in Captain, New Mexico where the originial Smokey Bear was found.
The Virginia Division of Forestry would like to thank all newspapers for the excellent publicity. Our job would have been incomplete without it.
The Virginia Division of Forestry would alslo like to thank the residents of this state for their response.
The people of Virginia eiyoy “low incidence of fires” and “low numbers of acres burned.” This is due to their conscientious attitude regarding the preservation and management of the 16,456,960 acres of forested land in Virginia.
The forest industry of Virginia provides jobs for 63,000 people. One of every six industrial wage dollars is ^ paid by the forest products industry, which amounts to nearly $1 billion annually.
The proceeds from the sale of the cachet will be used for forestry education with emphasis on youth, and Virginia will greatly benefit from this program.
