One of the women, Doris Donald, said, ‘It’s not work at all if you’re sharing.’ Besides her garden work, Mrs. Donald gathers blackberries, makes
them into jam and sells it for the project.
“When you work in a garden,” Scoggin said, “you start to think there’s so much produce, the earth is so generous, why is there hunger? I’ve been convinced over the years of my interest in the problem that it’s a political rather than a financial problem.
“There are droughts, terrible droughts in parts of the world and there is overproducion in other parts. Somehow the two just can’t meet. Trucks are stolen, they break down, the food spoils. A lot of supplies end up on the black market. A lot of money ends up in the pockets of administrators. So we were determined to decide
what specifically to do with our proceeds.”
Scoggin said his group’s project is not connected with the formal international project of the same name, although it’s possible that the money will be channeled there. He’s looking at several organizations; the group will make a decision soon.
“We’ll be very specific, very personal,” he said. “We’ll make sure it goes for irrigation or for equipment, or wfiateveriwe deride.” iU- -
