Icy roads, traffic accidents, structure fires, frozen pipes, leaky roofs and school closings resulted from January weather. Ski resorts, firewood sales and fuel companies thrived. January reminded us that winter was in full force.
After a record setting warm December, January weather sneaked in with unseasonably warm temperatures. January 1 showed a temperature reading of 60 degrees and it was 56 degrees on January 2. After that the roof fell in. January 3 and 4 clobbered us vith sleet, freezing rain and a little snow. It was a message to tell us to forget about December. Winter was here.
One interesting note about January’s weather over the past five years-it has been dry. Only 9.40 inches of precipitation has fallen during January since 1981. Farmers will tell you that this is not very much. Of the past five, January of 1981 was the driest with just .34 inches of precipitation. The following four years produced
