Republican sources insist publicly that they do not believe any of this will seriously affect the convention’s outcome, and that Viguerie will run a poor fourth or fifth in the field of five lieutenant governor candidates.
Privately, however, they are not so sure.
They not only worry that Viguerie’s public relations clout could skew the convention in the race for lieutenant governor, they see it hanging over the contest for the gubernatorial nomination as well. They are unsure, however,. just what impact it might have.
Whatever that impact, however, some GOP officials are concerned that the traditional patterns of party control are being challenged by a new and little known personality wielding political weapons the power of which they know all too well. For Virginia Republicans there is more than a touch of the Frankensteinian about the whole affair, and some find it a bit scary.
“It is sort of ironic,” said the Republican official. “Both parties have similar problems this year. Doug Wilder is the wild card in the Democrats' deck, and Richard Viguerie is t ■ wild card in ours.”
