tioned fattening of the party’s coffers. The delegates are elected at party mass meetings held in the 136 counties and cities around the state.
According to state GOP headquarters, the first round of these meetings will be on March 5 in Chesterfield, Wise and King George counties. However, since the localities schedule their own meetings and do not have to coordinate them with the state party headquarters, some may be held earlier.
Unlike the Democrats, whose delegates are committed to a specific candidate on the first ballot unless elected as uncommitted, Republican delegates are all elected as uncommitted.
“That’s what has us worried,” said a Republican official. “There could be 10,000 or 12,000 loose cannons rolling around that convention floor. If the number of delegates gets beyond 7,000 or 8,000, it will probably mean that Viguerie has brought in a lot of new people, and anything could happen.”
That is at the root of the regular party loyalists’ concern about Viguerie. They respect him as a staunch conservative, but they do not feel he has “paid his dues” in such a way as to entitle him to run for high office as the party’s nominee.
Yet, Viguerie is in an excellent position to run. His philosophical views, except for his opposition to the death penalty, are a conservative voters ideal. He is an impressive and personable candidate. His direct mail operation gives him the capability of penetrating repeatedly millions of conservative homes in the state in search of votes, and other millions across the nation in search of campaign bucks.
Beyond all that, he is favored by radio and television evangelist Pat Robertson whose worldwide hookup of electronic ministries could be rallied to Viguerie’s support.
