A Virginia governor would be able to run for successive terms under a proposed constitutional amendment that was approved Monday in the House, 51-43.

But the House defeated, 67-31, another bill that would prohibit a person from running for the office of governor immediately after serving as attorney general.

The amendment has to be approved by the General Assembly in two consecutive sessions, with a House of Delegates election in between.
