The term “New Right" refers to a conservative movement - political, economic, and religions — that has exerted a strong influence in American politics. The movement continues today, showing few signs of fatigue. Its goal is to create a conservative middleclass majority in the United States. Richard Viguerie, who has been called the “Godfather’’ of the New Right, is running for the office of lieutenant governor of Virginia. Also, he has recently moved to the town of Washington, Va. I met with him in his home for this interview.

Rapp. News: As a founder and leader of a conservative political movement, the so-called New Right, you have become a national figure, linked to a well-defined national agenda. With a good share of the New Right’s success at the national level attributed to you and your direct mail organization, wouldn’t the position of lieutenant governor of Virginia represent a step backwards for you? In short, why are you running for state office? And, if elected, won’t state responsibilities restrict your role as a national leader of the New Right?
Viguerie: I definitely reject the idea that being lieutenant governor of Virginia would be a step down; it would be an enormous promotion for me. I had the chance last week to visit with former Governor Mills Godwin in his home. The Governor has said a lot of things over the years that I like and agree with, but he said something years ago that I really like. A reporter asked him “Governor, after your term of office is over with, do you plan to seek higher office?” Godwin said “Son, there is no higher office than governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.” So that’s my attitude and philosophy. I would consider it a promotion.
The issues I’ve been speaking out on, with few exceptions, are issues of importance to people in the Commonwealth, and I can help implement those positions that I hold much more effectively with the high office of lieutenant governor.
Whether that issue is taxes (fight- < ing to lower them), fighting to give government back to the local government; schools, drunk driving, government bureaucracy, w'aste and inefficiency, national defense - there’s no issue that I’ve been dealing with that isn’t of concern to Virginia.
So I would like to have the opportunity to apply the leadership qualities
