Government has increased significantly under Governor Robb. It’s grown greatly and is getting larger everyday. We’ve got to reverse that trend, reverse the growth of the state government. ,
School boards: I think we need to have the option for local communities to elect their own school boards if they want to.
I would work for the enactment of initiative and referendum legislation so that the people could propose legislation and vote on it in general elections. I would like to see a situation whereby every tax increase passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor is submitted to the voters on the next regularly scheduled election.
Rapp. News: You are on record as saying that Virginia needs a well-managed state government that will not get in the way of the free enterprise system. You often are critical of government for “getting in the way” of business and entrepreneurs. Do you believe government should have any relationship at all to business?
Viguerie: Government is the servant of all of us, of businessmen as well as farmers or teachers. Government serves the people best when it’s at minimum level. I think that now we have a situation whereby government has gotten itself so involved in all of our lives that I don t know that we want to-just cut it off. We should not move cold turkey, but slowly and surely. We've got to recognize that many of our problems are caused by government involvement. Now whether its government in volvemnt in the farm area or government involvement in business, or in our schools or whatever — slowly but surely we’ve got to walk ourselves down from that latter that we’ve climbed.
The reason that we have this great and wonderful country, the reason that we feed a third of the world, is because of free enterprize; it’s not because of government. Government doesn’t produce anything. We need to get government basically out of the way.
Rapp. News: What do you believe should be the role of government in society?
